Instead of walking towards me like I expected, he turned away from me. His shoulders tense and hands clenched into a fist. The scruffy converse he wore scrapped against the linoleum floor leaving black line. Silver trudged forward and stopped until he was more that twenty feet away from me. He looked over his shoulder at me as though daring me to follow him. Pale blue eyes glinted with mischief and the air around him sparked with mystery. He jerked his head forward indicating to me he was going. It was that moment I realized what he wanted me to do. He wanted me to chase him. Chase him to wherever he was going.

❝Your smile completes me. Your words make me smile. Your eyes make mine shine. You’re the boy that kept me from bringing a blade up to my arm. The boy that kept me from packing a bag and running away. The boy that kept me sane. You threw rocks at my window, I threw whatever I can find in my pocket at yours. You’re the boy that made me smile when I felt like crying and you’re the boy I gave my life and heart to. And most of all, you’re the boy that’s the reason I’ll be standing in front of the altar when the sun sets tomorrow. Noah George, my best friend who set me up with his brother, I love you.❞ Cher Mabel has always been happy and content with her life. She was beautiful, intelligent, kind, loved and adored. But then someone cut the string that was holding all those wonderful memories together and made them slowly fall to the ground, shattering. Smiles and laughter. Bouquets and gowns. Up do’s and make up. Veils and trains. Tears and sobs. Sympathy flowers and black dresses. Wind blown hair and ruined mascara. Eulogies and cemeteries. No one expected it. Not Cher. Not Noah’s brother. Not Noah. No one expected Noah George to die.

Marley Fletcher is half of a person: stuck in a mindless, indefinite cycle of pleasant friends, obeyed rules, and whispered words of forced contentment, she’s trapped by what’s missing. Senior year of high school brings no more than another smattering of new teachers and Friday nights with old friends at the local movie theater. But Marley longs for something to complete her, to fill her dreamy innocence with passion and fervor. She wants someone to live for. She finds someone who makes her want to die. Selfish, cruel, and impatient, Jude Sinclair has not only cut off his ties to compassion and sympathy, he has torched the ropes with flames and laughed as they burned to ashes. Jude is an integral member of the underground, modern scope of organized crime—the infamous “Mob.” Despite his lack of Italian heritage, he has risen to the peak of his bloody career at only 24 years old: the deaths of hundreds linger at his fingertips, and it seems not one has left an ounce of regret on his indecent conscience. Jude doesn’t know what it is about Marley: a naïve, childish little high school girl with self-esteem depleting faster than the ozone layer. For the sake of a bet and a game he doesn’t quite understand, Jude grows determined to “break” her, to destroy her stubborn resistance until she surrenders to him, and then to abandon her. After all, Jude Sinclair can do anything to anyone. He can leave her shattered.
