Why do I write poetry? The question has plagued me since My father's remark Of not to immortalize my negativity And give it power over me My mother's belief That poetry is my outlet The way I express myself I say Poetry is a way for the words to fall out Scatter like sprinkles on a cupcake No conventional rules of grammar No need to conform Happy Sad Whatever the case It all comes pouring out In a messy heap Of this and that Broken pieces Aligned Into art The ugly duckling Transformed into a swan If there's so much dirt Why not make something of the dirt? Negative into positive Like the tooth fairy Or a fairy godmother With just a wave of a magic wand Anything can have beauty After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder No? Using poetry to express my emotions, center and learn about myself, and tangle with the idea of my self image and my view of those around me.
