Johnovi se už delší dobu zdá, že ho Mary podvádí. Tak zajde za Sherlockem pro radu. Ten se na ni zaměří a opravdu zjistí, že je Mary Johnovi nevěrná. John zarmoucen touto událostí se vrací do bytu na Baker Street a jeho nejlepší kamarád se ho snaží rozveselit. Jak jsou si čím dál tím blíž, John zjistí, že už nemyslí na Mary, ale že jeho myšlenky čím dál tím častěji směřují k Sherlockovi. Tato situace začne v Sherlockovi probouzet city a zjistí, že i on má pro Johna slabost.

"Udělej ještě jeden zázrak... pro mě. Prosím. Nebuď prosím..." Johnův hlas znejistil ještě více, "...mrtvý. Udělal by jsi to pro mě? Přestaň s tím, nech toho." Jeho řeč přešla v pláč. Dál už nemohl. I přesto, že tomu nechtěl věřit, vše nasvědčovalo tomu, že jemu nejmilejší člověk je mrtvý.
