When the space transport vessel Hunter-Gratzner is ripped apart by a meteor storm and crashes onto a scorching desert planet, only a small group of passengers survive. Among them are pilot Carolyn Fry, bounty hunter William J. Johns, runaway teenager Jack, a handful of settlers, and Richard B. Riddick - a dangerous escaped convict with eyes made for the dark and a reputation that keeps everyone at a distance.
Then there is Masey.
She was just another passenger trying to survive, but from the moment the ship goes down, something about her pulls Riddick's attention. She should be afraid of him like the others. She should keep her distance. But instead, Masey sees more than the chains, the rumors, and the monster everyone claims he is.
And Riddick sees her too.
On a planet with three burning suns, no mercy, and no easy way home, the survivors are forced to fight for food, water, and trust. But when darkness falls for the first time in twenty-two years, the real nightmare begins. Creatures rise from beneath the ground, hunting every living thing on the surface.
Riddick may be their only chance of survival.
But Masey becomes his reason to fight.
As fear tears the group apart, Riddick stays close to the one woman he refuses to lose. His protection is dangerous, intense, and impossible to ignore. The more Masey trusts him, the harder it becomes for Riddick to pretend she means nothing.
In a world swallowed by darkness, Masey finds safety in the arms of the man everyone fears.
And Riddick discovers that protecting her may be the one thing strong enough to make him feel human again.
