Alice was never supposed to die. They always joked of course, about finding her murdered, bloodied, broken, and dead. Dressed in blue and missing her head, the notorious crime boss brought to her knees; dealt like a deck of cards. It was a romanticised picture, a harmless daydream, but when the filthy pawns of Wonderland discovered her body a hush overtook the city. Alina was never supposed to be found. Until the day a messenger knocked on her door and told her of a death in the family. A family she never knew existed. Alina never asked for power, Alina was never supposed to be found, and yet with madness all around her what else was she supposed to do but to fall down the rabbit hole, with no sign of escape. Heroes. Ever since they showed up, people have gone soft. They're adored, worshipped. Devotion is showered upon them like rain. It's about time someone knocks them off that pedestal they stand on, someone to crush their pillars of faith. Someone like me. A villain. It's perfect. I'll be the undoing of heroes. ≠ disclaimer: very much needs to be edited, very much needs to be less corny and very much needs to be entirely rewritten by me. if you approach it as a goofy, corny, old 2015-esque superhero book then it'll be a great time. i'll be honest and say there are no pulitzers here. completed ✓ highest rank in sf: #9 cover: @narwhelly

"Zoey." His voice sent a jolt of electricity down my spine, which only heightened my awareness that only a thin column of dust separated our bodies. "Do you believe in superstitions?" I shifted uncomfortably against the splintered wall of the storage closet he had shoved me into seconds earlier. "Those are folk tales, right? Just myths to scare people off." "Not here." Every word that left his mouth was clipped, and the frustration bubbling beneath his forced calm was almost tangible. "Not now. Omens have power here, and you've been seeing far too many of them. So, forget everything you knew before. This town has a secret, and both you and I are targets." "Good to know," I tried to quip, but only a hoarse whisper issued from my lips. My heart slammed against my ribcage as I gazed into his dark eyes, searching for any hint of a ruse. "So, what are we supposed to do about it?" "We need to find out how this town really operates. For us to stand a chance, you need to know what we're up against. So, I'm going to teach you," his whisper broke through the dust column, and I felt a sudden sense of foreboding. "How to avoid bad luck." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - © 2018 evethespy. All Rights Reserved.
