"The Bells" is a heavily onomatopoeic poem by Edgar Allan Poe which was not published until after his death in 1849. It is perhaps best known for the diacopic use of the word "bells." The poem has four parts to it; each part becomes darker and darker as the poem progresses from "the jingling and the tinkling" of the bells in part 1 to the "moaning and the groaning" of the bells in part 4. After Evie Harper spends the day pining after her unrequited childhood crush, Harley, she drowns her sorrows in a bottle of stolen wine. But the next day, and one glorious hangover later, Harley is found with a very naked-very strangled stripper in his bed. Naturally the police assume that it's some kind of erotic play gone terribly wrong, but Harley swears that he left her alive and "orgasmically" happy when he went on the ill fated booze and condom run. And Evie knows Harley isn't a violent man. When the Chos ask her to investigate the murder, and possibly clear their son's name, she reluctantly agrees. But as Evie digs deeper into the dead woman's life she discovers that the exotic dancer had quite the past; one that involved drugs, prostitution, and gangs. Who knew the life of a stripper could get so dirty? Evie Harper Mysteries: Book 2
