Maéla föds som drake i en mänsklig kropp och växer upp som en av människorna. Hennes rätte far, en drakhanne vid namn Vrothgar, får till slut tillbaka sin dotter och deras relation blir med tiden obrytbar. Draken bryr sig inte om någonting annat än sin dotter och kommer göra vad som helst för att hålla henne i säkerhet. Det blir därför svårt att släppa iväg Maéla att utforska den mänskliga världen som hon också föddes till att ta del av. Hennes längtan efter en annan människas beröring och värme kan komma att kosta henne livet.
