Madara Uchiha died. He died not too long after his battle with Hashirama Senju, his former best friend. He used Izanagi beforehand in his right eye in case he lost to Hashirama which he did. After Obito decided to follow his footsteps, Madara named Obito the "Chosen One", and disconnected himself from the Gedo Mazo which immediately killed him. He died once. After Madara was being manipulated and was betrayed by Black Zetsu, Kaguya Otsutsuki took over his body, but when she was defeated and sealed again, Madara's body was too damaged, so he died. He died twice. So, how did he end up in the world of the living? Yes he came back, as the Madara Uchiha, He was reborn into his previous era, almost like time travel, But...he came back.. as a female? He is indeed grateful.
