Delilah Reynolds, a misanthropic young woman, unknowingly befriends a centuries old vampire, Adrien Fortescue. When an assassin comes after Adrien, Delilah is caught in the fray and killed. Besieged by guilt, he makes the decision to turn her into a vampire. But before his new progeny can be integrated into vampire society, she has to be presented to the Hallowed Elder, who also happens to be Adrien's estranged creator. The Hallowed Elder has her own plans to groom Delilah as her successor, and the new vampire is forced to quickly adapt.
