In the summer of 2012, a pair of twins named Stanley and Stanford Pines travel to Gravity Falls to spend the summer at their Great Aunt Mabels' tourist trap, the Mystery Shack. It seems like it's going to be a boring summer until Stanford finds a strange journal with a Pine Tree on the cover. Armed with knowledge of the paranormal, the Stans discover the mysteries of Gravity Falls.

There is more to Stanford Pines than what meets the eye. Dipper knows this for a fact. But what he doesn't know, is what Great Uncle Ford has discovered outside Gravity Falls. Outside of this world. Lost in the dimensions, Ford found himself in Krimson City, partnering with scientist, Ruben Victoriano, a brilliant, yet insane, psychologist hell-bent on developing a machine to link several consciousnesses into one mind. As bad came to worse and treachery began to unfold between the trio, Ford eventually managed to flee to another dimension. Now that he is back with his family, he has nearly forgotten the horrors he had witnessed. But when Dipper finds a new journal, one containing a log of all of his experiences within Krimson City, Ford explains that he wishes to forget about his encounter with Ruben and the atrocities he had unknowingly helped him preform.
