High school in the early 90s: it was before cell phones and social media, but the problems were the same. How do you get the guy you're interested in to notice you? What happens if you fall in love with your best friend? Why does physics class keep factoring into your love life? This novella is loosely based on my own high school experiences... but sort of an alternate version of them. You can only make one set of choices in life, so it's fun to explore what could have been - but wasn't - in fiction. Also, set in 1991-92, this is kind of a period piece now! In some ways it's a love letter to the teen books I read back in the 80s and 90s, in particular those by Ellen Conford and Paula Danzinger. I hope you enjoy it. This story was featured on Wattpad in 2016.

I feel my heart beating in my throat, the nerves devouring all of my thoughts. The wool uniforms that once comforted me aren't helping me now as the panic and nervousness flood over my body. My drum majors are running up and down the rows of my fellow band mates and color guardians giving us high fives and mumbling motivational phrases towards us. My hands start to tremble. I have never been nervous before a competition before but this one is different. This is the gate to the marching band big leagues. Our first national competition. Our directors start motioning for the band to start walking forward. We are on the field next. "Kansas City are you ready for the Valley Center Hornets to take the field" the announcer says making the crowd cheer. Here we go

She wouldn't be able to go to homecoming because of a stupid competition. Even worse, her dad was forcing her to switch from her flute to some weird thing called a mellophone. How will she survive her freshman year of high school if she's stuck in marching band?

Lauryn had no life. She was home schooled, and the only time she had left the house was to go to the store or to get food. The rest of the time was spent indoors, in her bedroom, either studying for her next online exam or watching movies on Netflix. This all changed when her Father and her Step mother forced her to enroll at the local public High school where they both worked at for their own selfish needs. And then she needed to attend Band camp. Fun.
