"Go ahead," I said, backing up against the pink wall of the shop. "Do something other than glare at me." I waited. One, two, three seconds... and nothing. I raised my chin at him. "You're boring me, mute boy." He stepped closer. Leaned toward me as his gaze burned into mine. Then... ❀ ❀ ❀ After three months in juvenile detention, it's time for Romy Pereira to help out with her family's flower shop. And it's not all bad... until they hire Jack Michel to work beside her. He doesn't speak, communicating with glares and scowls instead of words, and seems to be more interested in literal rocks than other human beings. And with an ex-convict mother, her friends drifting away, and the flower shop falling apart, the last thing Romy wants to deal with is Jack's attitude. She'll forever praise the day he screws up big time and gets himself fired, but until that day comes, it's mostly one cold-hearted girl, her silent (but still infuriating) coworker, and a whole lot flowers. A girl with her heart on her sleeve and boy with a reputation of breaking them. A/N: I started writing with this when I was 13. I love it a lot because I used it as a platform to talk about issues that mean a lot to me and I feel don't get enough attention (especially as I got older and learnt more), but please keep that in mind!! Cover made by: (sorry i haven't gotten your name yet, but i will put it down once i get it!) WARNING: This book deals with issues like self-harm and mental health. Dawood Khan, an American Muslim soldier in the US Army, had been an outsider for a good portion of his life. His Islamic identity was something he cherished, but others looked down on in disdain. Bullies at school ridiculed, mentally tortured, and physically assaulted Dawood for cherishing that identity. After a horrifying encounter with his high school bully, Dawood decided that enough was enough. He grew wiser, determined to face the terrorists that his religion was forcibly associated with. His decisions enabled him to encounter terrorists who killed in the name of their Creator, terrorists that claimed to follow the same religion he followed. For disagreeing with their twisted beliefs, these terrorists executed men, women, and children. This was not the Islam he knew. This was not the Islam that he followed. In hopes of changing his community's image, Dawood embarked on an excursion to better the image of Muslims in America. His voyage began in peace, yet ended in disaster and rage. Follow his life as he faces the growing danger of guilt by association and see the Muslim American community in a new light. Who is Dawood Khan and why is he known as America's number one enemy? "Your husband is a terrorist! You rag-headed murderers! DIE!" A random woman yelled before hurling an egg towards the young woman. "Mama," Khadijah whispered fearfully before wrapping her arms around the hijab-clad woman. Iman inhaled deeply before covering Khadijah with her body. Her daughter had suffered enough. She wouldn't let the bigots get to her. She swore that on her life. Iman had been hit with eggs, stones, and other minuscule items ever since the media had descended on her. They wanted to know how it was possible for Dawood Khan's wife to not know that her husband was a terrorist. He wasn't. There wasn't a terrifying strand of hair on his head. Nedim looked at the young teen in front of him and called out, "Khadijah." "I know what you're going to say, Imam Nedim. You'll tell me to have patience. You'll tell me that we'll find my father. You'll give me reassurances. You'll tell me that you believe in him, but you know what Imam Nedim?" The blue-eyed, Caucasian-looking teen whispered in question. Nedim quietly watched as the teen picked up the picture of his family on the table. She looked at it and smiled sarcastically before whispering, "I don't believe you, Imam Nedim. Instead of standing up for my father, you condemned him like the rest of the congregation. He isn't a terrorist. He never was. He was your friend, but you betrayed him. You helped destroy my family, while you live happily with your in. In my eyes, you're as bad as the men who shot him. Please don't try to console me when you are just as bad as them," Khadijah whispered before heading out the door.
