Sometimes what we set out to do isn't even remotely close to what we accomplish. Courage comes easily to some. Not to Ryder. Fear has been his constant companion ever since he can remember. He's always felt like he doesn't belong in his tiny village and is unceasingly accused of being a changeling-a wicked troll who infiltrates and takes the place of a family member, causing mischief and eating them out of house and home. He has developed a philosophy: never face anything bigger than you. Ryder's own family is very poor. Forced to work extra hours just to eat has taken it's toll on his Ma and Da. Ryder's own job is not enough. His only escape is to find better work. A knight to the king, he decides, is his best option. Try as he might, Ryder cannot meet the physical requirements of a knight and is forced to choose between his safety or his family. One chance remains. One chance to save his small but loving family. A quest. One that will challenge Ryder beyond anything in his worst nightmares. A quest that requires strength and cleverness and one thing that has eluded Ryder all his life: courage. One question bites at his mind as he shakily begins his long journey. One question chokes out his breath and beats on his heart. Can he learn to be brave?
