Steve left into the world to look for his friend. But after three months with no leads he and Sam decided to return home. Both weren't happy to go home because neither had that special person that would be there waiting to greet them. Peggy had passed years before they found Steve in the Ice and Sam's friend was killed in the line of duty. Neither had someone special and even if they did its not like they could tell that special someone. There would be to much risk.
