Betrayed by friends and abandoned by his goddess... Back from the dead and hellbent on saving his beloved. Knight Champion Breskaro Varenni served the bright goddess Seshalla every day of his life, questing for her relics and crusading against her enemies. He was a hero and a legend, the greatest knight of the age. But his most trusted friends betrayed him to the swords of infidels, and in death, Seshalla abandoned him, denying him Paradise. But Breskaro refused to fade into Oblivion. Instead he wandered the Shadowland for seven years until the dark goddess Harmulkot offered him the one thing only she could give, the one thing that still mattered to him... A chance to save his beloved Orisala from a fate worse than his own. Returned as a wreck of embalmed flesh animated by sorcery, with a host of the desperate and the undead under his command, Breskaro will do whatever it takes to save Orisala, no matter the odds and no matter the consequences. David Alastair Hayden takes you back to the exotic land of Pawan Kor, first seen in Wrath of the White Tigress, with this seductive epic of swords and sorcery in the tradition of Brent Weeks, Robin Hobb, Michael Moorcock, and David Gemmell. Tutelar Idris Menhyr is a brutal and enigmatic man, waging a campaign to eliminate the other warlords of Tirgodh. Tradition demands he stoke the fires of war, but he is driven by deeper motivations. Ahn, trained as a chronicler from birth in Ashiir, and assigned by divine decree, has the delightful task of recording every last word the man mutters, every step he takes. The Council of Kings sits apart from the blood shed in their name, ever vigilant of their kingdoms as they teeter between stability and stagnation. When a piece becomes too successful, too aggressive, sacred rites are invoked to manipulate the arena back into order. When Idris receives demands from the Council of Kings, he foists the task upon his chronicler and puts the tedious matter to the back of his mind. Ahn forges ahead, lost in a duty she has little knowledge of, and Tutelar Menhyr discovers that even a burr, if left to fester, can prove toxic.

A madman puts to parchment the doom of all creation. His black book tells a grim and hopeless history, of grand efforts gone awry and a future that can no longer be stopped. What he writes would drive sanity from the wise and kill the souls of the faithful, revealing their every hope for desperate lies. One being alone has withstood this Truth. That one is a misbegotten thing that has feasted and starved and suffered for uncountable ages. The black book speaks Vandal, the Witch of the Murk. She will push back the Horrors and a noble kingdom will rise. It speaks of the champion Valkyrie. By her hand will miracles be wrought, to bring justice against the greatest darkness known. It speaks of them, but it says only that each is a mere pawn. The Truth is that no man or woman is anything more than a game piece, moved by nightmares given form in the fathomless abyss. Blasphemies beyond imagining flow from the pen of the madman. Even he is ignorant of the Truth he records, for the words are not his own. Every passage comes to him from a great and tortured beast, feeding forever on the living and the dead. It feasts upon its own flesh and starves. Feasting and starving, starving and feasting, through bleak eternity. Hunger, and agony, and terrible fear... ...for eons. - Visit this book's website at VandalValkyrie.com or my own site at Ringwyrm.com -
