It is the fourth installment of the Evil Dead franchise, serving as both a reboot, a remake and as a loose continuation of the series; the first neither to be directed by Sam Raimi, have Bruce Campbell as the main star, nor be composed by the original trilogy's composer, Joseph LoDuca, instead it was composed by Spanish composer Roque Baños. The film is the feature debut of Alvarez, whom Raimi selected. It was produced by Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Robert G. Tapert: the writer-director, lead actor, and producer of the original trilogy respectively. Evil Dead was shot in New Zealand outside of Auckland, with filming lasting one month.[3] The film had its world premiere at the South by Southwest festival on March 8, 2013. On March 9, 2013, it was announced that the film will have a sequel, followed by a crossover with the original trilogy. Evil Dead was announced on July 15, 2013 to be adapted into a live experience as the first maze announced for Universal Studios Hollywood's and the second maze for Universal Orlando Resort's annual Halloween Horror Nights event for 2013.

After surviving her dangerous and traumatizing experience in the cabin, Mia is rescued by a man named Ash, who takes her under his wing as she heals mentally and physically. As time passes, Mia realizes just how much this man knows, and how he can not only help her through recovery, but how they can help each other. Past wounds are healed, a relationship is formed and demons - mental and real - are conquered.

Five friends are staying in a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead and unwittingly summon up demons that were lying dormant in the nearby woods. The demons possess the each of the young friends in succession until only one is left sane and with the will to fight for survival. But who will survive? Will they all survive from the demons?
