'Routine keeps me in line Helps me pass the time Concentrate my mind Helps me to sleep.' "Time to make the tea and the porridge." He muttered, taking himself inside the clean home. Shutting the door behind him he dragged himself through the decorated hallway. The wooden cabinets filled with pictures of different family moments. The newspaper carefully folded and placed on the table for Arthur. The mail lined up to read later. This was just one part of Francis' daily routine.

There really wasn't any stopping it. It wasn't my fault that my skin was as dark as the night, or my nose was broader than any other's, my hair was always rough looking and broke easily. There was nothing I could do, because to them I will and always will be, the black girl. HR: #3 Short Story Graphic by caesium-

My name is Saraphine-just Saraphine. It may seem strange for a human being with flesh, blood and a soul to have nothing but a first name, but, to some, I'm not a human and I don't have any of those things. You see, I was born a slave. Don't feel bad for me, child. I've had it much better than most. I bear no scars, never got separated from my sweet mama until I was near grown. I even have children of my own. Those three things are blessings beyond what most born into this life receive-and they aren't the only reasons I'm happy today. I wasn't always so happy with my lot in life-no, I've been bitter and angry and full of self-pity. My life has certainly had its ups and downs. Mainly because of love. Isn't love the make or break of all us women? We crave love from those around us. We simply cannot do without it and too often it nearly does us in. Let me tell you, dear reader, the tale of my life and of the journey I endured to find peace within myself, peace with my life and, yes, love.
