Awake is a satire with magical realism elements. Elizabeth Edwards, a befuddled and heartbroken young twenty-something, lives in Boston in the early 90's while slaving away at a marginal restaurant and trying to deal with her first major heartbreak. Addressing it in the most logical way-bedding random inapproriate men- she awakens after a night of typical restaurant worker recreational drug debauchery...in 2015 in a Paris, Texas hospital room.
Confused about the last night she was awake, how she ended up in a 24 year coma, how she is going to piece together the mystery of what happened to her best friend, her missing father, her estranged, yuppie brother- who is now a monk in Nepal?- and her "biggest mistake ever", Elizabeth has to piece together her past while confronting her present. In the process she needs to learn to become fully honest with herself and "awake" and see life for what it is, not what she wants it to be.
