Met haar vader die ze door dat verbod verloren is, heeft ze geen enkele reden om van haar versplinterde maatschappij te houden. Integendeel zelfs Er zijn al diverse pogingen geweest tegen de corrupte Oculi, de leiders van het bijgeloof dat vertelt dat mensen zonder blauwe ogen alleen maar tot verwoesting kunnen leiden, maar steeds weten ze degenen die in hun weg staan uit te roeien. Kortom: het leven is er voor sommigen een hel. Ook voor Ivy, die al misselijk wordt door de gedachte aan onschuldige mensen die zomaar vermoord worden in de Slachting, een jaarlijks "evenement" waar de Oculi walgelijk genoeg van genieten. Ondanks dat alles, krijgt Ivy het toch voor elkaar een degelijk leven te leiden. Totdat een gebeurtenis alles wat ze van zichzelf dacht te weten overhoop haalt....
