Red Scarclyf is a former slave who now attends the Cllerilus Empire's military academy due to his ability to summon spirits, a type of supernatural power. The ability is rare and thus highly prized. Red is an amnesiac that frequently has frightening dreams. The night before the graduation exam, Red and his only friend, Ryuuji, vow they will never abandon each other. The next day, Red overhears people talking about him. Turning back to find out where it is coming from, he suddenly realizes that the speaker, Chief of Staff Nakame, is the person who killed the familiar man in his dreams: his father, the king of the destroyed Vessailus Kingdom. In due time, it is discovered that Red carries the Eye of Uriel, a powerful talisman for which his home country was destroyed. This fact, as well as a fateful reunion, catapults Red into a quest for revenge against the Cllerilus Empire and for knowledge about his past. At the same time, his status as the bearer of the Eye of Uriel throws him into the long-standing conflict between the evil Erebus and his enemies, the 7 Guardians.
