It's not a real word, but that about sums up the relationship between lifelong best friends, Kennedy and Elodie. That's how it feels when Elodie suddenly texts Kennedy the night before college graduation after months of not speaking, "meet me behind the mall at midnight. Don't bring anyone!" Sure, it sounds like a good idea. Given that Kennedy just broke up with her toxic as hell situationship (not even her boyfriend), is about to lose her job, has no idea what she's about to do with her life, and can feel herself spiraling into what feels like a quarter life crisis. But, play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. In just a span of 12 hours, Kennedy will endure the most chaotic night of her life right before college graduation. Aria Matthews is in love with her best friend, Lucas Miller. It is the best kept secret since Area 51 and she knows she would take it to the grave. But things start changing in her senior year of high school when another of her friends takes it upon herself to set Aria up with the captain of the football team, who, incredibly, seems to be interested in her as well. And she doesn't understand why Lucas suddenly grows a stick up his butt about the whole dating deal. Sometimes it just takes a nudge to knock down years of carefully laid plans like the blocks of a Jenga tower. And sometimes, just sometimes, deeper and darker secrets are waiting to be exposed. Flickers of fallen people haunt this death mage--kings, queens, and boys buried in the blue ocean. Years ago, she fled those figures, to a house isolated in the tundra. There, she rebuilds herself from the boy she used to be--between the blood of badly done curses, the Skeleton Cook dancing in the kitchen, and the ice of darkest winters. But in the snows of her garden one day, she finds a magical egg, the size of a skull. Journeying to discover its origins takes her to the royal city, where she must choose to aid the queen in battling for her stolen palace; or take the hatching, violent creature (wanted by enemies in the city) and vanish back into the wilderness.
