Marcus Raider is the commander of a ship called "Praetorian." An ex-intelligence operative and Special Forces soldier, he is now in command of a mercenary group composed of other ex-military personnel and personal friends. They have made it their mission to single-handedly save the galaxy from itself - something not impossible for a man of his caliber. They are relatively well off, with them running a company on the side known as "Centurion Logistics". They generate revenue by serving as a pit stop for freighters and other such groups, as well as transporting goods. The station is run by mostly ex-military as well. Marcus still has many contacts in the government, including a personal relationship with the Emperor (Tiber Aurelius) himself. This is because he once saved the Emperor's life in an assassination attempt. The Emperor, in thanks, put him in command of his own starship at the young age of 25 - the youngest in Imperial history. Marcus Raider is supposed to be one of the best lovers in the galaxy, but none can claim him, because he has his heart set on the Imperial Princess, Cassandra Aurelius. They have a troubled past, and for several reasons are not together. Marcus Raider, in an attempt to rescue a planet, runs amok of a corporation called the "United Artificial Intelligence Conglomerate" (UAIC or Conglomerate). He is able to rescue the world's senator and his beautiful daughter, but the planet is severely damaged by orbital bombardments. The Conglomerate owns most of the senators, so no military action is taken against them. Now Raider is one of their targets, and he uncovers a plot by them to take over the Imperial government by assassinating Tiber Aurelius. He races against the clock to stop them.

This choice may not be his, however. Exploring the universe is his goal. Saving it is his Destiny. Things aren't going well for Julia Black. Business has slowed to a crawl for the rough-hewn Martian bounty hunter, forcing her to subsist on a diet of booze, cigarettes, and pity sushi. Life, quite frankly, sucks for her. So when the CEO of a mining corporation contacts her to find her missing son, Julia sees a chance to grab some major cash. Couldn't be too hard, right? But Julia soon finds out that there's more blood, rage, and vengeance behind this job than she could hope for, and that's when things get ugly.
