Se trata de una chica llamada Jennifer, de 18 años, que deberá asistir a una serie de pruebas, que se la hacen a todos los chicos de 18 residentes en su país(República de Lethburgo). Dichas pruebas contienen terribles obstáculos a pasar y a superar, que estos chicos deberán lograr con total éxito, para poder finalmente convertirse en hombres y mujeres maduros e independientes que trabajan y luchan por su país.Esto además permite a la República a decidir si el muchacho debe ser exiliado o no. En la República todo esto es tradición, desde años se lleva ejecutando dichas pruebas con todos los jóvenes de 18 años. Jennifer no sólo debe lidiar con la pobreza y malas condiciones que están dominando a su hogar, sino superar la muerte de su padre y además superar este terrible suceso que desconocía completamente, además deberá apartar de su camino todo romance pues es la única a cargo de su hermano pequeño y su madre(Emma). Deberá decidir entre dejar a su hermano y madre desprotegidos o ser una exiliada.
