After getting banished from his station on the Red Line, Ivan finds Alfred wounded and dying in one of the tunnels. He decides to help him and find out what happened to him. He then finds out that Alfred comes from the mythical University that he heard of only in stories told by his sister. Both of them slowly realize that they long for more than life in the underground and want to know how it was like to live up there. Alfred however knows more than Ivan about what is going on above them and promises him that they will get out some day and will again be able to live like the generations before them. Before 1936, I was alone. Russia was in a state of chaos after the Bolshevik takeover at Petrograd. Vladimir Lenin was gaining power at a frightening rate. Alfred who sneaks into Russia as a spy during the Cold War, he meets a dancer named Ivan and a nice old woman. But what happens when he's in danger or even caught?
