Eragon and Saphira have traveled east down the Edda river, out of Alagaesia and into unexplored terrain. They must find a place to train the future dragon riders and keep the eggs and Eldunari safe. Meanwhile the few eggs left behind in Alagaesia have already begun to hatch, the riders need a teacher. They need Eragon.

Eragon has left Alagaesia for a faraway land that he isn't even sure exists - a place where he could raise and train dragons and their Riders without wrecking havoc on the land. The first half of this story is written in third person limited point of view, featuring Eragon on his mission to find the land, building it, and also features Nasuada with her troubles rebuilding the Empire. The second half is written in first person, featuring an elf named Luthvierna, who has managed to bond with a baby dragon called Risngard and is studying under Eragon to obtain the skills necessary to become a qualified Dragon Rider. Only she is much more than comes to the eye.

Darkness surrounds Icepaw and his Clan as a mysterious new prophecy hints that trouble will soon come. He is determined to protect his Clan at all costs from the danger, but what he didn't know is that the danger lurked closer before than it ever has, and Icepaw has to put in all of his strength to protect the Clan he has come to love very much. But with the darkness rising, he is also facing troubles as well. He didn't know who he could trust anymore, who he could love, or what he should do.
