The story is set somewhere in North America in the not too distant past. Readers are invited to guess the exact year and place. Als unerwartet Onkel Alfred zu Besuch kommt und ihr eine Arbeitsstelle anbietet, erkennt Ani darin die einmalige Chance, ihrem eingeschränkten Leben zu entfliehen. Auch wenn es für eine junge Dame ihres Standes alles andere als angebracht scheint. Nun sieht sie sich mit einer Arbeitsstelle in einer Bibliothek, einer monströsen, mechanischen Kartei und dem Leben der weniger Reichen konfrontiert.
