This story follows the ONI-created Ranger program, a cooperative initiative to create an Elite team of Spartan-IIs and Spartan-IIIs trained for and assigned to tasks of reconnaissance and infiltration. Narrated in the third person following Kenaniah-086 and his Ranger platoon as they carry out high-risk missions, following well-laid plans that never go quite as planned, Into the Heart of the Flames focuses on the untold brotherhood between Spartan-IIs and their younger generation and stands as the companion to the co-authored and to-be-written Born Into Fire. NOTE: The naming conventions and some aspects of the Ranger program draw heavy influence from John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series (obvious to those who've read him).
