"So the world ended - I guess that was shitty. You know who else is shitty..?"

Gerard's a Halfling. He's the son of a mermaid and a sailor, and his new home is Cantonsville. He spends most of his days swimming, or watching the boats, or visiting the beach café. Frank's by the seaside for the summer, working as a waiter in his grandparents' café. He watches the boats, the surfers and the swimmers, and he's amazed by one of the regulars, a small, raven-haired boy with a cheeky grin and webbed fingers, who swims like a fish.

A broken relationship and hidden secrets send Frank and Gerard into a spiral of lies. Their hardest challenge? Trust. They are both reserved people, Frank more than Gerard.

"He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." When notorious pirate (and total asshole) Gerard Way snatches young, innocent Frank Iero from his tidy, planned-out life and deposits him on the infamous pirate ship, The Black Freighter, he is immersed in a world of deception, violence and sin. The thing is, though, he knows from the start that it won't be the fighting that destroys him-- it will be the loathing he and Gerard feel for each other that will tear him apart in the end.

"You can run away with me, anytime you want." I want to get away. Away from the abuse at home, at school hell, but we're not friends. I could never be friends with Gerard Way. He's just some guy that fate seems to drive me towards. His brother may be even more of asshole than him, making my school life living hell and I guess things at home are not too great either. And despite how much of an asshole Gerard Way is, he's the only one that seems to make anything better.
