In Contenton, everybody smiles, but only because it's the law. The Happiness Laws ban all simpering, whimpering, scowling, glaring, and particularly crying in public. And they all lived happily ever after. Except for Rebecca Swansen, a seventeen-year-old girl who fears she might be a criminal. She suffers through school with a tense smile on her face. She wants nothing more than to be happy, but can't seem to blend in with the popular crowd of giggling girls. Instead she sits in a tree with her best friend, Peter Barrett, and whispers dangerous ideas and forbidden thoughts. Peter isn't interested in hiding. He wants to run. If he can only convince his best friend to follow him into the unknown, he believes he can find a different kind of happiness. But, of course, being happy isn't as simple as leaving a place that makes you unhappy. Together Rebecca and Peter search out freedom, independence, and contentment in a runaway adventure that tests the strength of Contenton's smile.

Speaking in others stead is a habit I try not to get accustomed to. But in this case I'll make an exception. If I ever were to say that I could measure up to Elise, despite her being a part of me, I'd be a liar. We say that we have strong spirits but rarely are those claims ever tried to their limits. And in such instances I am thoroughly guilty. Hopefully this account will attest to that. A monolith to my own short comings, and a warning to those with a dream greater than themselves. In 1946, war-weary Rose Grantham leaves the grim, ravaged streets of London on a whim, hoping to rediscover who she is and where she came from. Mousehole is a pretty little village in Cornwall with a turbulent past and undercurrent of betrayal, grief and destruction beyond the sparkling blue of the sea and the whitewashed cottages. For Rose, it offers the promise of anonymity, rest and renewal. Or, so she thought. As she investigates deeper into the mysteries of the past, and experiences her first taste of love, she finds that her quiet journey of self-discovery may be much more than she had once anticipated.
