" my name's blurry face and I care what you think. " Dan Howell has an unknown condition where he cannot see faces - no matter what he wears or does - they are always a blur. The doctors nicknamed it 'blurry face', and there's absolutely nothing they can do about it; Dan will have to live without faces. That is, until he meets Phil Lester - the 'bad boy' of Dan's new school - who's face is strangely visible to Dan; much to Dan's wonder and Phil's distaste.

He inflicts red ribbons on his arms, and wears long-sleeved shirts even on the hottest of days. His parents aren't too cool with him and patently show it, abusing him in ways that scar his mind forever. Then the new kid rolls around--Dan Howell, a sarcastic, witty, and all-out happy-go-lucky kid. He makes friends fast, and is soon under the impression that Phil Lester is a kid who backstabbed his friend after talking shit behind their back just under a year ago, leaving Phil to be in the heart of a rumor that is not true by any means. Dan despises Phil until he witnesses the bullying himself--and decides that things may not be as true as they may seem...follow the journey of these two as they unravel secrets, go through the hardships of depression, and become closer with each passing day.
