The story is based around a family of Christians. Jacob is he eldest in his family. He is 17 and turning 18 in a couple of months in the story. Annabella (whose nickname is Ally) is the second youngest child in the story. She is 14 years old in the story. The two of them have been 'best friends' ever since she was born and they share a special connection. Their mom is a nurse and their dad is a professor. When Jacob turns 18 and leaves to join the war, Ally is gutted and disappointed that her brother went (despite the fact that she didn't want him too). The two of them write letters during the next year, sharing heart-warming moments and special messages to each other.
