Will there be a Unicorn? and Other Tales is a collection of short rhyming stories for kids which I'm updating as they come to me. The title story - Will there be a Unicorn? - has illustrations by the wonderful Sringkhala, more coming soon. One day I'd like to see it published as a picture book with really detailed, cute and funny illustrations. I imagine a unicorn on each of the early pages, out of sight of the protagonists but visible to the reader. Exploring pathways of the creative journey.

Diane Simmons always had the bad luck to look like a spitting image of her tall twin brother David. But as her world turns upside down, Diane has no other choice but to embrace their resemblance; with her father and David dead, two younger unmarried sisters in tow, an emotionally unstable mother and no other male successor, she doesn't see any other alternative to save her family and her home but to become her brother - and bury herself. And even if she thought it will be easy to impersonate a spoiled young heir that always gets his way, things get more than a little complicated with the arrival of David's so-called best friend, Captain Talbot, who seems to know more than she'd like him to. With his arrival, the secrets that have been buried in the heart of the Simmons home start to resurface and it looks like someone wants Diane dead one way or another...

This is a work of fiction, yet it includes some elements of real life. The reader make perhaps inject their own thoughts - be they contradictory or arousing reactions other than those described. It is intended as a glimpse into that space, between fantasy and reality, the place where sometimes two strangers meet and create within it a semblance of a home? Whilst it may feel at times almost as real as any real home, this place is an illusion. Words do not foundations make and although they may tether one in place for a time, life and the reality of living ultimately override the validity of this place, and one must accept - difficult as it may seem - that illusion is but the self's desire to seek relief. Motives and modus operandi may differ as people process this place in personal ways... The constant however is the same: Words can be exchanged and emotions bartered, but, words alone can never replace even a single moment of living outside the myriad lines they create. Being illusionary, no such transcendence can evolve from the exchange. These exchanges can prop one up, salvage and salve. Yet he concept of love - the emotion - perhaps unintended and created in the process is but a fairy tale... perhaps a parable to pass on when one reaches the other side... the wiser for having reached it. As to the parable itself? That is best left for the reader to construct.

I think we should all take a good look at these questions and try to answer them the best we can. It's time to be honest with ourselves.
