He never thought he could leave Berk. However, when he was chosen to kill the Monstrous Nightmare, his own fears were overcome by something else. The feelings to protect his own. He never thought of coming back. But fate had other plans.

Same as any other. A fifteen year old Hiccup runs away, well, rather he flies, from Berk. Because He couldn't kill the Monstrous Nightmare in front of the Village, and he saw no other option. But he will return to Berk unexpectedly.
