We often asked each other this question, we called it friend love, a love that would never break, we said it the way a girl would tell her best friend that she loved her, but the way he said it did not sound like our playful friend love, it sounded stronger, deeper in a way, more so than it had before. "Yes of course I know you love me, I love you back." I usually said something like this, kind of playfully, then we would laugh kind of like it wasn't real love, like more of a joke, but that didn't happen. My words got stuck in my throat, and came out an awkward croak, as if I was a girlfriend, about to break up with my boyfriend, but he was in the hospital after a non fatal car accident and he said he loved me. It sounded like I felt obligated to say this to him, but didn't really mean it. "I'm sorry," he said after, "can we pretend that didn't happen, it just kind of came out." He pulled away his hand, then he kind of pushed on my back, which meant he wanted me to get up, and I went to the couch next to the wall. Then, he got up, and quickly left the room, "You can take that chair if you want!" He yelled from the hallway, but I stayed where I was. What had just happened? Grace and Nick have been best friends since they met in sixth grade. They have remained best friends for years, and even ended up going to the same college along with Grace's friend Stacy. Everything is normal between Grace and Nick, until something happened between them that changed how they felt about each other forever.
