After a power outage that shook the world, a tsunami that left her hometown underwater, and a viral disease that resulted in a separation from the rest of her family, Kassandra Tate thought she'd never live to actually see the monsters behind the first three waves of the apocalypse. That is, until she realizes the monster has always been inside of her. Killing other humans isn't something Kassandra would ever choose to do, but she doesn't have a choice. There is this voice in the back of her head saying things she can't comprehend--this inescapable instinct pulling her to do the unthinkable. Murder is the only thing on her mind when she shows up at a makeshift shelter near the washed-up remains of her home in California, but before she can so much as make a move, she notices just who the refugees are: a girl and a boy around her age, and--most surprisingly--her twin sister Kalina. Kalina was supposed to have died long ago in the epidemic. She and the rest of their family had been quarantined into a sick-ward of their safety camp, and Kassandra had been told that survival was hopeless--that they were goners. So what was Kalina doing here now, alive? In an attempt to reconnect with her twin, Kassandra curves her urge to attack as best as she can. The longer she stays with Kalina and the refugees, however, the harder she finds it is to keep her composure. How can Kassandra control the Silencer within her, before it takes over completely?

Against impossible odds, Thomas Wilson survives the first three waves of the alien invasion, holding on to the equally impossible hope of finding his identical twin brother, Oliver. Driven by his love and duty to his family, he refuses to give up, joining a group of soldiers in a last-ditch attempt to defeat the alien invaders.
