Second book of the When Machines Break trilogy. After the fiasco on the Argo II, Leo has to go through the rest of the quest learning to love himself again. It's a hard process but with the help of his newfound friends he hopes to overcome any challenges he faces along the way. He slowly starts to get better... until he lands on an island in the middle of nowhere.

Leo feels left behind. The rest of the seven are somewhat nice to him, but he's still ignored for the most part. After Calypso is kidnapped, Leo goes on a quest to find her. He never comes back, but Calypso does. She insists that he was behind her until she reached Camp Half-Blood. That's when the seven and Calypso find the note. Leo has decided to run away. They don't understand why Leo of all people would run away, but they are determined to find him. That's when Hera shows up with an unconscious Leo, and a big screen. Time pauses, and they watch the shocking memories of Leo Valdez. How well do they really know about their supposed friend?

Leo was desperately confused. Just a few hours ago, he had 6 awesome friends, but ever since a strange visit for his least favorite D-list goddess, he felt like nothing. His "friends" were ignoring him and talking horribly behind his back. A visit from Hera has him convinced that there his only one way. But memories are a dangerous thing, especially for a demigod. Im going to be honest; since my mothers death, I was never as expressive or open with people as I was when she was still alive. I was just more comfortable keeping to myself. She loved me so much, and I was just naturally happy, but that was the old definition of Leo Valdez. Since her death, I had to pretend. Happiness wasn't natural anymore, it wasn't me. I felt alone, and humor was a good way to hide the pain. I think that my mom was the only real friend I had, the only person who I was myself around, but that was until I met Jason. He gave me a reason to try and be the real Leo, he gave me a friend.
