The greatest irony of Sandman's existence is that he doesn't sleep. Sleep is a luxury he cannot afford and a privilege he will never be granted. Instead he lies awake in bed, talks to shadows, curses the darkness that follows him, and envies the others for having what he himself can never attain. The one silver lining, if you can call it that, to being cursed with permanent insomnia is that it gives him plenty of time to think. And so when he's not bringing sleep to the sleep-deprived and nightmares to the dreamers, he wanders the streets of the twisted universe he calls home and thinks. He thinks about his existence, and he thinks about his identity, and he thinks about the people around them and how many of them are the same, soulless phantoms trying to reclaim a humanity they threw away ages ago. He thinks about his role in all of that and wonders if he should feel guilty. Mostly, though, he thinks about Benzedrine. Without Benzedrine, there would be no powerful potions, no elixirs, no one to satisfy cravings and fuel addictions and soothe urges. Without Benzedrine, there would be no Sandman. We're back

It's Halloween night and Patrick Stump is at some costume party that his friends dragged him to. After an hour of being pushed around in a crowd of drunk and sweaty teens in slutty costumes Patrick decides to go somewhere quiet. The next thing Patrick knows is that he's waking up in the basement of a cabin, which he soon learns is in the middle of the isolated woods on the edge of town. 。°•・。•。。°•・。•°・。 WARNING: there are mentions of self harm, drugs, murder, torture, prostitution, and multiple other things. Pete's past comes back to haunt him, and as he runs away he's hit by a truck. Legally dead for 20 minutes, he's resurrected by a handsome blond stranger who explains to him that he is no longer human. As he soon realizes, he's what you call a Talented; someone with strange, unique abilities due to a unique mutation in their genes. With a new ability of manipulating thoughts and reading minds, he's dubbed too unstable for the outside world, and is therefore placed in an institution for Talents with an inability to function with their powers; meeting a strange cast of Talenteds with strange new abilities. But who is Blurryface? And more importantly, what does he have against Pete and his new friends? Maybe being superhuman isn't as cool as he thought...
