Na de dood van haar moeder verhuist Maaike met haar vader naar Heeze-Leende, een dorpje bij Eindhoven. Ze komt er al gauw achter dat ze niet gewenst is. De mensen gedragen zich vreemd en laten duidelijk blijken dat ze het niet op prijs stellen dat zij zich in hun midden bevindt. Het toppunt van vreemdheid is bereikt wanneer het hele dorp voor één hele week ziek raakt. Wat is er aan de hand in Heeze-Leende? Maaike gaat op onderzoek uit, maar dit is niet zonder risico. Een mysterieuze verdwijning vindt plaats en niet lang daarna wordt er een lijk gevonden.

Er heerst onrust in Heeze-Leende. Zij die daar wonen, kunnen er niet langer meer in vrede en veiligheid hun leven leiden. Dit is voor Braid Raynil de reden om de bewoners uit te nodigen om in zijn dorp, Callantsoog, te komen wonen. Het is niet de enige reden. Braids volk is in oorlog met het ras dat zich in het naburig dorp Petten ophoudt. Met de komst van de Heeze-Leendenaars hoopt Braid extra zielen voor de oorlog te winnen, zodat zijn ras als overwinnaar uit de strijd zal komen. Zal hij daarin slagen?
