Dan, el mejor pianista de su ciudad (a pesar de tan sólo tener 8 años), tiene un accidente de coche, después del cual, queda sordo. Siente como si le hubieran arrancado parte de su alma. Siente como si le odiaran. Siente como su corazón se marchita poco a poco. Además, ser sordo no ayuda en su vida social, la cual ya era poca antes del accidente. Los chicos de su edad se sienten intimidados por él, sin que pueda evitarlo. Pero de entre la oscuridad, emerge un rayo de luz. Ese rayo de luz tiene nombre y apellidos : Phil Michael Lester.

Su madre siempre solía decirle: "Ten cuidado. Sólo porque tengas poderes no significa que debas usarlos." Su padre, por otro lado: "Nadie puede saberlo nunca, Dan. Nunca." Sus padres lo apoyaban tanto como Dan podría esperar o desear. Tal vez lo hacían porque no podían negar lo que habían visto, o tal vez porque simplemente eran sus padres y tenían la obligación de hacerlo. Dan sabe muy bien que él no es normal; de hecho, nunca ha conocido a otra persona como él. Nadie más puede mover objetos con la mente. Nadie puede hacer temblar habitaciones, o explotar ventanas. Nadie puede, excepto él. Dan vive aislado del mundo, con poca o directamente ninguna interacción con los demás, y posee una vida social semi-inexistente. Es decir, hasta que un cierto muchacho con ojos azules lo cambia todo.
