Over spring break, Reilly moves from San Francisco, California to Cass, West Virginia, an old once-was lumber town. she tries to make friends, but everyone simply shuns her. She's like a fish on Mars. While unpacking boxes in the basement, she finds an old, leather bound journal. With everyone's entire life written out in it. By looking at the lives of her peers, she is able to change little things. Trivial things ike what Laurel ate for lunch or what grade Michel got on a test. But then she starts to change major things. And then it starts to all fall apart...
