Mermaids exist. If you are a non-believer you better reconsider your opinion. In fact, if you've ever found a flat river stone that looked like it sparkled in the water, that was a mermaid wanting your attention. If you happened to send that stone skipping across the surface of the water, you just let that mermaid soul escape into the ocean to join all of the merpeople. As a human, of course you will never know which mermaid came from your skipping stone or if your stone even held a mermaid. Most merpeople do not look for the humans that gave them life. So I'm sure you could imagine why 16-year old Amber would be shocked.
