Sixteen years ago Amelia Shepherd got pregnant and she had a baby girl, Scarlett. Amelia decided on giving her baby up for adoption and getting clean so she could focus on her career. Now, with both of Scarlett's adoptive parents out of the picture Amelia steps in to raise her child and soon learns to realize just how similar they are.

Addison has just arrived in Seattle to work on a case. So much has changed since she was last here, so much she doesn't know about. After learning about Derek's death, Addison reaches out to Meredith to attempt to give here a shoulder to lean on, while also trying to start her own grieving process. When the case becomes more complicated, Addison decides to extend her stay, and extend her relationship with Meredith. At first she thinks the constant sleep deprivation is causing her to look at Meredith differently, but she soon realizes it's something more.
