Imagine an American doctor, a widower who in 1903 finds himself in a far away tropical place. Dr. Gerald McAllister is a doctor involved with a cholera epidemic in Ubec, Philippines. A widower, he thinks only of work and is a somewhat brittle overly serious man. When he meets the flirtatious Agustina, life changes for him. Woman with Horns is historical fiction set at the turn of the century in the Philippines. It is also a love story and is part of my collection, Woman With Horns and Other Stories, available in Kindle. Please post a review for the book in Amazon. Woman with Horns is very popular among students and many have posted skits in YouTube based on this story. Check it out. I am working on collecting all my short stories and novella into one collection, so watch out for the Collected Stories by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard. PS. I'm always looking for an international publisher.

The story "Acapulco At Sunset" is set in Acapulco in 1790 when the Spanish galleons sailed from Spain to Mexico to the Philippines. The main character, a Filipina woman living in Acapulco, waits for the galleon from Manila and muses on her life there instead of in Manila. This is the title story of the collection, Acapulco At Sunset and Other Stories, by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, the complete collection of which can found in Kindle. It is part of my book in progress: Collected Stories by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard. I'm always looking for an international publisher.

Cecilia Manguerra Brainard's Fundamentals of Creative Writing is a marvelous textbook that combines useful technical advice on craft with beautiful practical examples in her own stories. Brainard's treatments of writerly voice and left brain/right brain theory as it connects to writing are among the best available in today's writing textbooks. Her story examples cover a variety of story types, techniques, points of view, and historical as well as contemporary topics and themes. This book will indeed help writing students write strong stories and improve their craft. Brava, Ms. Brainard. Copyright by Cecilia Brainard. All rights reserved.

The novel, When the Rainbow Goddess Wept, by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard has been reviewed as follows: "Interweaves realistic events with myths of women fighters and goddesses, as well as fantastic dreams...Brainard's appealing characters are larger than life, people who change before our eyes, yet remain utterly convincing....A fast-paced, sensitively written first novel." (Kirkus Reviews) "The strengthening of the national spirit; the loss of innocence in two generations - these themes are explored by the author, who was born in the Philippines, with persuasive conviction and stark realism." (Publishers Weekly) "Stories of war are perhaps most compelling when told through the eyes of children, whose innocence is always so tragically incongruous to the adult madness that rages around them. When the Rainbow Goddess Wept, a first novel by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard that chronicles the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II, is no exception." (Los Angeles Times) "Enchanting throughout, this novel will mesmerize the reader right up until its victorious ending." (Booklist) The book is published in the US and in the Philippines, and there is a Kindle edition. You can find these in Amazon. Please post a review there. Thanks. This book was translated into Turkish. I am always looking for an international publisher.

Midwest Book Review says this of the novel, Magdalena: "Expertly written by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard (USC Adjunct Professor and teacher at the UCLA-Extension's Writers Program), Magdalena is set in the chaotic backdrop of twentieth century East Asia. A romantic, powerful tale of three generations of Filipino women, written with a close eye on the terrors of war and the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II, Magdalena is an intense, involving, highly recommended saga that documents author Cecilia Manguerra Brainard as a gifted author with a mastery of storytelling that will keep the reader's total attention and engagement from first page to last!"
