Things couldn't get any worse than it already has for 18 year-old Alex Newman. He's been in a VERY cramped Vault for all of his life. One day, the vault dwellers run out of food. Alex is forced to leave the vault (since he is the only smoothskin) and embarks on a journey all across Alaska.
