Faye Caldwell has never been the same ever since her sister, Terra, killed herself seven years ago. She's haunted by her sister's memory, taunted by nightmares that mock the day her sister plunged to the ground. The fear of falling and ending up like Terra consumes her. Even the slighest falls make Faye scream, the terror taking over her body. Faye doesn't know how much more she can take. What she doesn't know is that those fears and dreams will drive her to do something that will change the way she looks at her life forever. Kole Frost lives a normal life. He has friends that he can (somewhat) count on, and a brother who is always there for him. He doesn't think that being dragged to Xia, a club that allowed minors, would do anything to him. He doesn't want to go, but he goes anyway--just to get his friend off his back. And when his best friend, Terence, gets drunk, he doesn't think anything of it. It's normal. Normal. But little does he know that that trip to Xia is about to change his life forever. The two worlds collide when Faye and Kole meet at the legendary Gate. The Gate, said to be protecting them from a horrible beast on the other side of its borders. The Gate which separates the two genders from each other. The Gate, which no one has ever seen before. That is, until now. Faye and Kole will learn that their "normal" worlds are not so normal after all. They'll learn that Cesve has secrets, ones that have been kept for a long, long time. And they take it upon themselves to find out just what those secrets are. There is one thing that must always be remembered: The Gate keeps them apart.

[[word count: 80,000-90,000 words]] Content and/or Trigger Warning: This story contains scenes of verbal and physical abuse that may be triggering for some readers. NOTICE: Before the Morning is currently undergoing revisions! A sensitivity reader (someone who goes through your manuscript and assesses representations in your work) identified a number of issues surrounding the Filipino representation in BTM. I'm rewriting with the goal of creating a more authentic and respectful story. I'm sorry for the pain I caused by failing to include accurate Filipino culture and in having written from Nora's point of view.

Jas gives me a sympathetic look. She sighs heavily, long nails tapping against the wooden table, dodging the 'Missing' posters scattered all over the surface. "Maybe," she finally says, "Just maybe, he doesn't want to be found, Ava." I clench my jaw. "No. I refuse to believe that. He's not like that." "What do you know?" Jas snorts, finally withdrawing her hand from the table and turning back to look at me. "You don't even know him." xx Ford Wilson was in three out of four of Ava Jackson's classes. They had one mutual friend, did a project together once in sophomore year, and had the same lunch. When Ava's car had broke down, she had even ended up parked outside of Ford's house, asking for gas. In Ava's life, he was everywhere. And yet, she didn't notice him until he was nowhere to be found.

Ever since I was a young girl, I've felt like I was drowning. I've felt like a little kid who walked too far into the ocean, only to be pulled away by the tide, not knowing what was happening, not knowing how to stop it, not knowing how to get my head back to the surface. ➳➳➳ Ember Cole is not the only one who feels like the world is being swept out from under her. She notices many who seem lost and scared. She can see their hair billowing up with the current. She can see their mouths opening, filling with water, while they cry for help. She can see the fear in their eyes as they try to see through the dark waves that keep pulling them under. She calls them The Drowners. The Drowners are the giver-upers of the world, and they give up on everything.

“My sister passed away over a month ago. The last time I saw her was yesterday.” When eighteen-year-old Reese Washington dies of an undetected heart defect, she leaves a bucket list behind: ten things, all incomplete, detailing the stuff she never got to do. Struggling with her grief, Reese’s twin sister, Callie, sees no other option but to set out to complete what she had planned; she’s determined to finish the list, however slowly, on behalf of the person who made it. The ultimate tribute to her sister. Reaching the end is something Callie’s always been counting on. Finding help in the form of Mitchell Hunt, the candid editor of the school newspaper who's way too keen on sharing, certainly isn’t. Then again, neither is the unexplained psychic connection between her and Reese. Think twin telepathy, and then think again.
