Everything seemed perfect for Troye and Connor. Their YouTube channels were growing and as Troyes singing career took off Connors interest in photography grew in his free time. Troye noticed Connors interest in photos and for their anniversary he gives him a beautiful camera and attaches a note to the top. The year is 2096. The earth has seen two more world wars since 2016. The last war that destroyed a quarter of Canada and half of Japan, was enough to make the government enforce strict actions. Countries are now split, no communication at all between them. Humans now live in conglomerations of small pods stacked upon each other. Each person has their own space, but they're all confined to being underground. Half of the people living inside the pods have never seen natural sunlight. Birth rates are violently controlled due to the lack of space and pods constantly having to be built. Couples are allowed, but physical contact reaching past anything more than a hug is forbidden. Sex is strictly banned unless it is agreed by contract or an operation is done to assure a baby cannot be created. It's a tough life. It's a boring life. And it's a lonely one too. A life underground simply isn't good enough for some and sooner or later, you have to leave the shadows.

Troye Mellet is not popular. He's middle class in the teenage hierarchy and the head of the bitter kids. Cocky "populars" and superficial teens are his enemies, and high-school society his hell. But, behind the social ruse that is his hatred, there is a deep sadness. Loneliness; bottled and festering into complete misery. Connor Franta is popular, and he is weighed down by that label. He's the shyest one of his group, the vulnerable one, the easiest one to tease. Terrified of losing his "friends," even with their constant bullying, Connor's life is a whirlwind of anxiety. He's miserable, but the idea of sitting alone at lunch shakes him to his core. When a group of underdog teachers notice their unfortunate similarities, these seemingly polar opposites are brought together. Both boys find life-altering answers, love and comfort within a person they've been trained to hate. After all, since when did the truest kind of love care about status? TW: self-harm, eating disorders, talk of suicide, gun violence, smoking. (Nothing to the extent of a mature content filter)
