Several generations after the war between StarClan and the Place of No Stars, a new prophecy arises that devastation will come and divide the Clans forever, but Whisperleaf is worried that the prophecy will divide StarClan again as well. No one seems to have any idea what the prophecy means: their only clues are visions of death and fire, while one cat is haunted by dreams of battles taking place far away.

When a mysterious cat shows up and declares he is from past the mountains, and is here to collect a cat from the clan as a peace treaty, Rainfrost is chosen to be sent away forever as the chosen cat. Rainfrost sets out to fulfill a prophecy, spoken many moons ago unknown to either cat, with this mysterious stranger. Will Rainfrost ever gain the things she most wants? Or will she find something that she wants more?

It's all about the survival of the fittest in the wild, and it isn't any different for the Clans - to survive, cats must be able to hunt and fight, and to hunt and fight, cats need claws to aid them. In ThunderClan, everything seems well for the cats - they had abundance prey and good health; nothing seemed wrong. Every cat was excited for the birth of Starlingwing's first litter of kits. She bore four healthy kits... however, one of them have a slight defect that may affect her entire life - missing claws. The Clan was horrified. How can a cat survive without claws? How was the small kit going to survive if she was attacked? Even worse, every cat was shocked at the little kit's eye colour - brown. It was unheard of for a cat to have brown eyes. Why does she have brown eyes? No prophecies, no omens, no signs from StarClan. Is Softkit a sign of ThunderClan's doom? Many, many years after Bramblestar's rulership, the Clans have had their peace. War and fighting was long forgotten, except for common quarrels. But nothing ever lasts as long as the Clans will live, and soon, their dark days return as unexpected as a cat pouncing on its prey. Things become difficult for five young cats as they receive a dark and dangerous new prophecy that had been buried in the depths of time itself. All of these apprentices are trying to become accomplished warriors to their Clans, but it becomes more dangerous and difficult as mysterious new beings come and go within their territories, wrecking havoc. Now, it's up to these five apprentices and their friends to solve the mysteries of the prophecy that is told to them by StarClan themselves, before all connection with their ancestors is lost.
