GOING OVER—a book about the Berlin Wall in 1983—is told in two alternating voices. There's Ada, a pink-haired graffiti artist who lives in the west. And then there's Stefan, Ada's boyfriend, who lives with his grandmother among Stasi spies in the east. Ada is desperate for Stefan to leave his static life, his going-nowhere job at the ice factory, his thwarted dreams, and join her in the west. Stefan, however, has seen, first-hand, the consequences of such risk taking. GOING OVER reflects an important era (for this is the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall) and is based on an actual escape. But most important, it is a story about divisions, about risk, about love. It is a story ultimately alive and relevant in this still divided world of ours. GOING OVER has received three starred reviews and is a Junior Library Guild selection.
