The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralized by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several protagonists through these events. The most notable are Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. Darnay is a former French aristocrat who falls victim to the indiscriminate wrath of the revolution despite his virtuous nature, and Carton is a dissipated English barrister who endeavors to redeem his ill-spent life out of his unrequited love for Darnay's wife. It is the 5th Age 506. It is an Era of Restless Discontent. Harles and his friends sail to the southern shore of Etooria, the very heart of the Republic of Heron and seat of power to the Senate and Peoples of Heron. Once there, they're faced with many trials set upon them, within the cities and lands they travel through. They are witness to the neglect and misuse of power by the current Wardens of Etooria, for not all is eternal and glorious within the Heart of the Republic. Harles now has to act quickly on his wits, to save his friends, himself, and those who see him as a new hope at another chance to a good life. Two years past within Eternal Etooria, the Shadows of Harles' past haunts him and he is found out and brought before powerful figures and who seek to use Harles for their own political gains and machinations. There, in the heart and seat of power itself, Harles makes the choice, of dealing with the devil and learns his place in the hierarchy of mortal men. Yet, the Old Gods are restless within the seat of the republic's power, Holy Heron. There, in the ancient house of the Old Gods, Harles feels his spirit stirring once again, and is reminded of his vows to go on crusade. He hatches a plan with his handler, vowing the promise of ultimate power, for his very freedom. And from there, given new freedom, Harles ventures westward, on a ship he hires, taking his new mercenary band, known as the Sons of Nomitor, to Holy Iboriaño, bloodied from years of war. There they arrive on its most darkest and desperate hour, besieged by land and sea. The Zhóudian Empire of the Dark Elves is hell bent on total subjugation of the sons and daughters of mankind within this now shattered and bleeding mortal realm.
