"People are incredible, ya know?" Audrey took one last drag from her cigarette, before putting it out and placing it on the table. She picked up her pencil, a sketch book balanced against her thigh. She had been staring at it the whole time, and still made no effort to look at me.
"We.. we can feel things. Internal things, like betrayal and love and... We take our emotions out on others because we don't know how to handle them ourselves. And we use our talents to express ourselves, whatever the hell it is we can do, we use it. Whatever the hell we want to say, we express it through.. through writing or, or.. And we're.. we're so fucked up, Samantha. Oh my god, we're terrible.." Tears threatened to fall from the silver eyes behind her glasses.
I watched her, concerned. And finally, she looked up, staring at me from across the table. The soft glow of purple lanterns strung around the room reflected off of her tears.
And she smiled. Making a grab for her glasses and quickly wiping away the tears before poising them back into place. Acting as if those few seconds never happened.
"Sorry." She chuckled, and even in the dark I could see a light blush tinting her cheeks. "It's just.. my creative heart and broken mind, heh."
I wanted to comfort her. I wanted to cry. I wanted to tell her everything was going to be ok. That she was the best thing that's ever happened to this damn town.
And that's when I knew.
I was in love with Audrey Alexandra Hamilton.
